Consider Volunteering at My Mamma’s Hat Farm...
There is absolutely nothing like being witness to wildlife within the natural environment. Bring your brother, scout troop, your church choir [I love singing but, only in the shower] or come by yourself, make new friends or meet the old one’s. Commit to one day per week throughout the 2010 season, it will do your heart good. You should know that farming is not for the faint of heart. Previously described environmental conditions were not exaggerations and you should be prepared for any weather conditions, rain or shine. Bring a hat, layers of clothing, and sturdy shoes with a closed toe, sun screen and insect repellant that suits your needs. Bring food and plenty of water to drink. Production and processing are quite intensive and there is no cafeteria on the farm however, the sampling of produce in the field is highly encouraged. My Mamma’s Hat Farm & CSA is an alcohol free, smoke-free and drug-free farm. I sincerely believe the experience is incredibly rewarding. Make a day of it with the book club or your soccer team, time slots are filling up fast. It will be great to see you but, leave your dog at home!
For 2010 we need volunteers for harvest days. It’s a fun way to get out in nature on those bright spring mornings when the crisp 40 degree air is sharpened only
by icy cold water and a 15 mph wind. You don’t know that you’re alive
unless you’ve given at least a pint of AB negative to very thirsty and
insistent mosquitoes before the summer’s sun has warmed the morning air to a stultifying 85 degrees. That’s before 8:00 AM. It’s a fun fast paced way to gain a greater appreciation for the bounty we gather for our families, our friends and our community. Consider joining Monday morning’s 6:00 AM harvest for CSA members or Friday morning’s 6:00 AM [spring], 5:30 AM [summer] market harvest. If you enjoy the contemplative practices of planting and weeding on any other day of the week there is plenty to do.
